Nokia E5 review

Category : Reviews

It’s hard to argue that Nokia’s E-series isn’t Espoo’s crowning achievement of recent years. The business-based blowers pack in great design, fit well with the functional but hardly fancy S60 interface and rock battery life that draws envious glances from Duracell bunnies.

The E5 is the latest, an entry-level model that nonetheless crams in HSDPA, a 5 megapixel camera and Wi-Fi. If ever a phone was after theBlackBerry Curve 3G, this is it.

Messaging is at the heart of the Nokia E5. Everything about its email and text skills scream class. Setting up mailboxes is a breeze, no matter what provider you’re with and there’s even support for Microsoft Exchange, which makes the E5 perfect if you want a blower to double as your work email machine.

Mailbox handling is exceptional, with easy searching for old missives and straight forward switching between different accounts. It’s every bit as good as what the BlackBerry Curve 3G has to offer.

Nokia E5: Keyboard

The QWERTY panel is also a real winner, besting the BlackBerry competition. The keys are much softer than those on the Curve 3G, but have a pleasing heft to them when you’re tapping out texts. Like all full portrait keyboards, though, it takes some getting used too. Your hands can feel cramped, and if you prefer something more capacious, then perhaps an Android QWERTY slider, or even the Nokia E6, might be a better bet.

The dedicated messaging button does come in mighty handy though. A short press takes you straight into all your mail boxes, while a longer push takes you to a new text. This feature, brought across from E-series and C-series devices, really helps the E5 stand out from its rivals.

Nokia E5: Design and screen

The E5 is a stunner. It has a real heft to it and towers over the ultimately average BlackBerry Curve 3G. The metal finish and slimline feel add a real touch of class, making it a blower you won’t be embarrassed to pull out down the pub.

The navigation button design is textbook Nokia, and although this won’t delight all, it will please fans of the Finns’ phones. The larger form factor means these keys are much less awkward than on smaller efforts, such as those on the Nokia C5. However, S60 still remains unspectacular.

The 320 x 240 pixel 3-in screen renders icons in a nasty blocky fashion and while the homescreen, with its dedicated contact tiles and easy Ovi access is great, the menu structure feels more dated than a Britpop greatest hits collection.

Scooching around said menus is easy enough thanks to the nav key, but if you’re after something lush, simple and straightforward, iOS and Android provide better options.

Nokia E5: Multimedia

However, the E5 does manage to stand up well in the multimedia department against its key BlackBerry Curve rival at least. Video playback is poor thanks to that low res screen, but the music app is passable and much better than that on the Curve.

But it’s the camera where the E5 really stands out. At 5 megapixels and with a flash to boot, it’s much better than the woeful Curve 3G’s snapper.

Sling in a price tag of £199 SIM-free, some £30 cheaper than the Curve, and the E5 looks like a very smart smartphone indeed. But if we had to offer one key reason for buying the E5, it would be battery life. With 670 hours standby time and 5 and half hours 3G talk time, it’s a winner. In real terms, that translated to three solid days of browsing, mailing and music playing before we needed to power it up. That’s fantastic compared to other smarties.

The E5 is not a mobile for do-it-all smartphone fanatics. But it is a great work phone, albeit one which runs a somewhat shonky operating system. If you’re weighing up getting this or a BlackBerry, we’d recommend the E5 every time.

Alienware M11x review

Category : Reviews

We reviewed the M11x a few months ago and it is still THE netbook of choice for the discerning gamer. There are other netbooks that can game and other ultra-mobile laptops with dedicated graphics but none that hit the sweet sport as well as the M11x. Alienware has even updated the M1x with brain-melting specs galore.

The M11x packs impressive credentials in to a lightweight 2kg frame with sleek dimensions, so it’s not as light or powerful as Sony’s VAIO Z-Series at 1.43Kg, which can also handle playing Crysis in HD. In it’s original config it cost £600-£1000 cheaper (depending on the config), this latest version costs more, at nearly £1500.

Top 10 Gaming PCs

——————————————-

What remains the same is the sleek 11.6-inc chassis that comes emblazoned with Alienware shin-diggery. The all black model has a shiny top that opens to reveal a bump matte black surface that continues over the touchpad – so you can’t slide off after long sweaty gaming sessions. While there’s no robust metal embedded in the frame, the plastic feels very durable and there’s no bend in the screen. There’s also every port you’d expect with: HDMI, DisplayPort, 3xUSBs, FireWire, VGA and WiFi 11.n plus bluetooth

After seeing so many chiclet keyboards at this size it’s good to see Alienware keep the same backlit keyboard with no gaps between the keys. The board makes touch typing easy, providing your fingers are already versatile enough.

We loved Alienware’s management hub, which provides a ridiculous amount of multi-hued rainbow mayhem to change any light any colour – a veritable disco fantasia at your fingertips. The hub also has face recognition software with different security levels, although it can be fooled by facial hair – but luckily you can override recognition with password protection.

Alienware M11x: Performance updates

The processor has been updated from a Core 2 Duo SU7300 to a new, faster Core i5 processor,  256GB of solid state memory (SSD) remains the same.  The main difference this time around is that the massive 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M, this means the powerful card automatically switches between integrated and discrete graphics for you. It can cope with Crysis on it’s beautiful 1388×768 display Crysis without skipping a beat, although it can’t be pushed to full HD because the M11x screen only supports 720p HD, although at the small size the screen means the difference between full HD and 720 HD is negligible. .

With no moving parts and at much faster speeds, SSD means the M11X has the best hard drive technology on the market., multitasking without any lag.

Alienware M11x: Battery performance

Finally, the brilliant 8-cell battery returned nearly four hours of battery life, with all settings maxxed to performance mode. That‘s mighty impressive on a model where mobility is such an important factor. Switch the graphics to power saving you can get nearly eight hours life.

Combining gaming prowess with a portable frame, the Alienware M11x is a fantastic alternative to the large gaming nottebooks. Even non-gamers will apprecite the strong multimedia and battery performance.

The Alienware M11x is available now  from Dell

It has been a busy day for Toshiba at IFA 2010 in Berlin. Not only has it launched an iPad rival in the Folio 100 tablet, but also its first 3D Blu-ray player and a Regza 3D TV. Next up is a refresh of the budget Camileo camcorder range.

The pistol grip S30 and P20 camcorders both record HD video at 1080p, while the S30 nails stills at 8-megapixels and the slightly cheaper P20 snaps images at 5-megapixels.

News@8 IFA 2010: Samsung Galaxy Tab and Loewe 3DTV

Category : News

Samsung releases Galaxy Tab: The hype has finally ended as the Samsung Galaxy Tab was unveiled this morning at IFA. All eyes were on the stage as Samsung ran the press through the Tab’s many (already leaked) features, for the full experience check out T3’s hands-on images. Next on its agenda was the Samsung UN65C8000 the world’s largest 3D LEDTV which was also released today boasting a near £5000 price tag. Ouch. Finally Samsung have also released its HD HMX-T10 1080p camcorder with a 20-degree lens angle which is designed to making shooting that glorious HD footage less strenuous.

Philips gives customers the ‘cinema’ experience: Philips today announced its Cinema 21:9 Platinum 3D TV, which although having a very long name, is actually incredibly cool. Boasting a cinema-esque 21:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 3D this TV was the flagship among Philips many 3D releases of the day.

Loewe enters the 3D market: German company Loewe has unveiled its 3D concept TV at IFA, and what a concept it is. Looking quite simply like a piece of high art rather than a LED HD 3DTV the concept was just one of three new products launched by Loewe.

Sharp adds a pixel to 3D: Sharp’s HD Quattron series has been given the 3D treatment in the form of their first 3D HDTV the Sharp 3D Quattron TV. Utilising an extra yellow pixel Sharp is able to make images seem brighter and clearer, which can only be a good thing in terms of 3D. We like.

Toshiba launches iPad rival: Toshiba has released the Folio 100 Tablet which it hopes will give it a firm stake in the tablet market. Running Android 2.2 and measuring 10.1 inches the Folio is larger than the other Tablet rival the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Toshiba has also released another first for the company in the form of the REGZA WL 3D series; its first 3D HD LEDTV. REGZA series also now includes the VL range which is a high-end HD LED range based around the WL 3D TV’s but without 3D compatability, instead aiming for high spec 1080p display quality.

Philips to launch glasses-free 3D TV in 2013

Category : News

We’ve already seen the possibilties of glasses-less 3D on the NIntendo 3DS console, but until this point had been told that converting the tech to your home television was a little too ambitious.

Well Philips didn’t like that answer too much and today unveiled a prototype model of a 3D panel they’re hoping to bring to market within three years.

Those on the ground at the IFA tech show in Berlin are describing the technology as "jawdropping" and a 52-inch model will be going on sale in 3-5 years according to Dutch company Dimenco which is developing the tech for Philips.

The television uses lenticular technology with creates the illusion of depth by using a series of interlaced strips at different angles and has a back panel with a resolution of 4K, which is 4 times greater than 1080p.

Official Twitter app for iPad launched

Category : News

It’s about time. Twitter has finally launched its application for the Apple iPad with a host of innovative new features to take advantage of the beautiful 9-inch touchscreen.

The biggest development over the iPhone iteration is a new feature called Panes, which means if you click on a link in a tweet, the content within will open up on the right side of the page, be it video, pictures or a news story.

————————————–
More from the T3 App Chart:

————————————–

Users can open as many Panes as they like and swipe between them, left and right. Any video content is also featured "inline" which means you can perform other tasks within the app, while the content loads. If you pinch a video, it becomes full screen.

Speaking of multitouch, a range of gestures have been built into the app. Pinching a tweet quickly brings up details about the author and reply options, while placing two fingers together and pulling down on a tweet reveals the replies.

So far Tweetdeck for iPad has been doing an admirable job of filling the void, but it looks like the real thing was worth waiting for.

Twitter for iPad is now available as a free download from the App Store. Check out the Twitter Blog post for the full details and let us know what you think @t3dotcom
